What is MOET NUCLEUS?

MOET means multiple ovulation and embryo transference. This thecnology allows to build large families of complete brotherhood. This members have an average of 50% of its genes in commun (the same proportion of father and daughter). So, its possible to establish satisfactorily the genetic value of milky bulls through analysis of milky production of a large number of sisthers, avoiding to wait for their daughter´s production.
Moet nucleus provide data to select reproductors through testing its complete sisthers and maternal and paternal half sisthers, breed in adequate number in the MOET nucleus, evaluated at the same standardized farm, the nucleus.

How was the MOET NUCLEUS IDEA DEVELOPED?

This method was proposed in 1984 by Nicholas e Smith, who showed that selection in this therms would be so good or better than progeny selection tests. So far, many other MOET nucleus are working in many countries. The Guzerat MOET nucleus is the first to work with Bos indicus in tropical enviroment and conditions.

HOW DOES MOET NUCLEUS WORK?

Cows that clearly are superior in the sellected characteristic are submitted to multiple ovulation and fetilized by a superior bull either and theyr embryos are tranfered to receptor`s cows. In short time, large families of complete borthers and sisthers are built.
Pregnant receptor´s cows are breed in the same place, where all individuals of the families are born, breed and tested in the same standardized conditions. Genetic values are established by testing familiar production.

Advantages of MOET nucleus

The main advantage of MOET nucleus is quickness of selection: bulls are tested as soon as their sisters finish their first lactation. So, the age of the bulls at testing in the MOET system are generally half of the bulls tested by their progeny. This fact increases the year genetic improvement and causes many other pratical advantages.
Younger bulls generaly have better semen quality and longer reprodutive life, improving disposal and price of their semen. On the other side, older bulls may produce less semen or even be dead when its genetic value is known.
Another important advantage is the high intensity of selection that this technique offers. The improvement in reprodutive rate, allows to work only with animals that are very superior inside a race.
Also, concentration of human and finantial resources and animals in a same estructure alows decreasing costs in testing the reprodutors.
MOET nucleus tests have lower acuracy than progeny tests done in big number of daughters. However, studies have shown that this lower acuracy is overcame by time gain.

The MOET nucleus may be integrated to progeny selection tests?

The advantagens of MOET nucleus can be increased with aditional progeny test in the same program. By this mean, young bull selected inside superior families in the MOET can be submitted to progeny test that will provide accuracy improvement. The most important world companies that work with artificial insemination have around 40% of their milky bulls under progeny test, selected in MOET programs.
