History

Guzerat MOET nucleus was created in 1994 by efforts of a small number of progressists breeders under technical support of researchers of Veterinary School of Federal University Of Minas Gerais (UFMG) - Brazil, and EMBRAPA – milky cattle and by collaboration of Brasilian Center of Improvement of Guzerat (CBMG) and Brasilian Association of Guzerat Breeders (ABCG). So far, it’s a condominium of breeders.

- Guzerat cows:

Madona - Doadora

Galiléia - Doadora

Characteristics

MOET Guzerat nucleus aims improvement of milky and beef traits in cost-effective production system for tropical Brazil. Considering that the main market for guzerat bulls is related to milky and/or beef production in pasture feeding with medium levels of nutricional supplementation, sellection is performed in these conditions.
Planning is done by reseachers of Veterinary School of UFMG.
Its classified as an adult and not closed MOET nucleus. It means that the donator cows are chosen after at least one lactation and that it is opened to entrance of any superior animal produced outside of the program.
Every year, the MOET program is planned to form 12 families of complete brotherhood with a minimun of four females and a male in everyone, through hierarchical crossing with four bulls. Currently, donator cows and bulls are selected through its genetic value which is calculated by EMBRAPA. From donator cows its also required na adult weight greater than medium value for the race (450 kg, under pasture).
Several cientific researchs, including academic thesis, has been developed based in data of the program. Some of them have already been presented in brasilian and international congress in zootechny. We have been visited by reseachers and breeders more and more frequently .

Embrio collection and transference center

The embrio transferences are done in a specialized center, the CENATTE Embriões, sitted in Pedro Leopoldo, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. After the determined number of pregnancies are reach, the donator cows go back to their original farm.

Evaluation center

The pregnant receptors are transported to the evaluation center, a privated farm supplied by technical and operational structure to perform evaluation of the animals. This evaluation center, that is the Taboquinha Farm, sited in Itambacuri – Minas Gerais State - Brazil, belongs to the major partner of the program , that disposed to hostler it without direct finantial gains, but with the will to make the program possible. The cows owners pay by their animals hostelry in the evaluation center.

- Guzerat cows been milked at the evaluation center:

Vaca Delícia em ordenha
- Young Guzerat females that will be tested in their first lactation:

Novilhas prenhes

The MOET products are keep in the program (males up to 15 mounths and females until finishing their first lactation) under comercial conditions: pasture for growing animals, and pasture plus supplement based in grass silage or sugar cane mixed with urea plus limitade amount of concentrate according to milky production. The characteristics that are observed are: weight, escrotal perimeter, muscle constitution, age at first labor, milky prodution (also protein, grease, lactosis and somatic cel count) and animal temper.
